Tatum's Tulips: a blooming future for all

Our story begins with a simple but powerful belief: every individual, regardless of ability, deserves to be seen, valued, and supported.

Founded by Katie and Michael Burwell, passionate advocates and parents, Tatum's Tulips emerged from the shared experiences of families whose lives have been touched by Down syndrome. When their third child, their beautiful daughter Tatum, was diagnosed with Down syndrome at birth, she sparked a light in them they didn't know was dim. Through her joyful spirit and unique gifts, Tatum transformed not only their family's perspective but also their sense of purpose.

What started as a small grassroots effort to raise awareness has grown into a movement focused on education, advocacy, and creating lasting change. Every step we take is fueled by the remarkable journey of Tatum and her siblings, Noah and Maisie, and by our commitment to creating a more inclusive world for all.

As Tatum's Tulips has grown, so has our mission. Katie continues her work of advocacy and service as the Director of Development at Jack's Basket, a nonprofit dedicated to celebrating babies with Down syndrome and supporting families from the very beginning of their journey. Her work reflects the same values that inspired Tatum's Tulips: connection, belonging, hope, and the belief that every life is worth celebrating.

Tulips and Down syndrome share a beautiful similarity: both represent uniqueness and the celebration of diversity. Just as each tulip bloom is distinct in shape, color, and form, individuals with Down syndrome are wonderfully unique, bringing their own strengths, perspectives, and joy to the world. Both tulips and those with Down syndrome symbolize growth, resilience, and the beauty found in embracing differences.
